Antique Buddha Statue - Seated Antique Thai style Hermit / Wise Man Statue - 29cm/12"
Measures - (Height) 29cm/12"
An antique Thai style Hermit or Lersi from Thailand. Lersi or Ruesi are synonymous Thai terms for a hermit or sage, deriving from the Sanskrit word Rishi, meaning "seer".
These figures are revered as ancient ascetics who live in seclusion to achieve spiritual enlightenment through meditation and powerful practices, and are considered the root gurus of Thai magical tradition
A Rishi is an accomplished and enlightened person - a wise man. They find mentions in various Vedic texts. Rishis are believed to have composed hymns of the Vedas. The Post-Vedic tradition of Hinduism regards the Rishis as 'great Yogis' or 'sages' who after intense meditation realized the supreme truth and eternal knowledge.
The term "Rishi" is derived from the Sanskrit root "rish," meaning to see, perceive, or know. Rishis are revered as seers who gained profound insight through meditation, contemplation, and a deep connection with the divine. Their wisdom extends beyond mere intellectual knowledge to a direct experience of spiritual truths
Here, the Hermit is posed in the Teaching mudra, seated in the padmasana or full lotus position, on a simple pedestal, with his hands raised in front of his chest in the dharmachakra mudra.
In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger of both hands touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom.

Instead of protecting or perfecting an immortal soul, the ethical project focuses on transforming intentions, reducing suffering, and recognizing interdependence.
