A lovely pair of antique Khmer-style temple guardian lion figures in the pre‑Angkor, 10th‑century style of Banteay Srei.
These expressive guardians evoke the rich spiritual and artistic legacy of the Khmer Empire, whose temples once dominated the sacred landscapes of Angkor. Temple lions, or singha/rajasiha, were placed around the outer precincts and principal entrances of shrines, serving both as ceremonial greeters and vigilant protectors, warding off malign forces and marking the threshold between the everyday world and the divine.
In Khmer culture, the lion symbolises strength, courage and divine authority. Cast in the round with meticulous attention to detail, these figures display powerful, compact bodies and an ornate coiffure, their full lips and almond‑shaped eyes with incised pupils set beneath gently arched brows. Their alert stance and stylised features convey a sense of poised energy—regal, watchful and ready to defend the sacred space in which they stand.
