Indian Buddha Statue - Antique Gandhara Style Bronze Standing Buddha Statue - 70cm/28"
Measures (Height) 70cm/28"
An antique Gandhara-style bronze standing Buddha, richly modelled and full of quiet presence. This elegant figure reflects the unique Gandharan fusion of Hellenistic, Indian, and Central Asian influences that flourished across present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan, and northern India.
The Buddha stands on a round double lotus pedestal, the lotus symbolising purity, compassion, and the joyful flowering of enlightenment. Rising immaculate from muddy water, the lotus evokes the journey from worldly attachment and confusion toward inner clarity and spiritual fulfilment, a central theme throughout Buddhist art.
He wears his characteristic rippled winter robes, the drapery falling in soft, naturalistic folds over both shoulders. A portion of the garment slips gracefully behind the wrists, while the lower hem descends partway to reveal the undercloth beneath. This sensitive treatment of cloth and form is a hallmark of Gandharan sculpture, uniting realism with spiritual dignity.
The Buddha’s hair is shown as straight, gathered into a topknot that culminates in a prominent ushnisha, symbolising his advanced spiritual development. His serene face is finely rendered, with gently downcast eyes, a single arched brow, and an aquiline nose that together convey calm focus and compassionate awareness. The elongated earlobes recall his princely youth, when he wore heavy gold earrings before renouncing worldly life, while the urna or third eye on his forehead signifies his ability to see beyond ordinary suffering into deeper truth. His arms are raised in an open, welcoming gesture that suggests blessing, generosity, and hospitality toward all beings.
As an image type, the Gandhara Buddha has become an iconic representation of Siddhartha Gautama—both historical and transcendent—inviting contemplation of the Dharma and the path to awakening. It stands as a testament to the profound interplay of art, culture, and spirituality, and to the enduring power of sculpture to carry spiritual meaning across time and distance.
The casting of this piece is particularly fine, evident in the crisp details of the face, hands, and flowing robes. A beautifully matured patina enriches the surface, adding depth, character, and a strong sense of age. Traditional in appearance yet timeless in appeal, this Gandhara-style standing Buddha will bring serenity, cultural depth, and quiet elegance to any home, office, or sacred space.

Thank you so very much! Well, I needed Buddha here -- and I certainly now have Buddha here in many ways and many forms -- with thanks to HDAsianArt. Each statue you've sent has worked out very well -- each in its own way -- each combined in settings with other art pieces -- each has blended well -- finishing off different areas of my home -- and all communicates well to tell a story of different aspects of my life. I intentionally chose your pieces -- to get away from the "norm" of beautiful gild Buddhas that everyone has -- your pieces are quite unique -- and a bit more "real" -- which serves my purpose well. So, thank you.
