Indian Buddha Statue - Antique Gandhara Style Bronze Teaching Buddha Statue - 29cm/12"
Measures – (Height) 29cm/12”
An antique Gandhara style Buddha seated in the lotus or Padmasana postion, with each foot placed on the opposite thigh and hands raised in the double dharmachakra or Teaching mudra. His robes cascade fluidly from both shoulders. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. This symbolises generosity.
The Gandhara Buddha, characterized by its unique artistic style, holds a profound and multifaceted significance in the world of art, culture, and spirituality. Originating in the Gandhara region, which encompassed parts of present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Gandhara Buddha represents an artistic and spiritual fusion that reflects the historical and cultural interactions of the region.
The Gandhara Buddha strikes a balance between realism and idealism. Capturing the human form while imbuing it with spiritual qualities. This artistic approach highlights the Buddha's historical existence as well as his transcendental wisdom and compassion.
The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
He has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
The Gandhara Buddha is a testament to the profound interplay of art, culture, and spirituality. Its distinctive style, influenced by the confluence of diverse cultural elements, captures the essence of both the historical and transcendent aspects of the Buddha.
Moreover, the Gandhara Buddha continues to inspire contemplation, dialogue, and appreciation in the contemporary world. It stands as a symbol of cultural synthesis, tolerance, and the enduring power of art to convey profound spiritual truths across time and boundaries.
A detachable aureole sits behind the head of Buddha, symbolising his divinity.
