With the right hand reaching down and fingers lightly touching the ground, this posture commemorates the moment the historical Buddha steadfastly faced Mara, the demon who assailed him with storms, terrifying visions and his three seductive daughters. By calling upon the Earth Goddess Thorani to bear witness to his countless past acts of merit, the Buddha overcomes temptation and fear and moves into awakened clarity.

In the story, Thorani rises from the ground and wrings the water from her long black hair, unleashing a torrential flood that sweeps away Mara and his army of demons. This gesture has become a powerful symbol of enlightenment, moral courage and unwavering determination.
