Antique Khmer Style Koh Ker Standing Bronze Brahma - Hindu God Creation - 94cm/38"
Measurements H94cm (38")
An antique Khmer style standing Brahma in Cambodian 10th century Koh Ker style.
Brahma is the Hindu God of Creation and one of the Trimurti, the others being Vishnu and Shiva.
Known as the Creator and therefore tasked with the creation of the universe, Brahma has at times experienced great popularity.
Given his role as the creator of the universe, it is interesting to see the varying creation stories of Brahma himself. Early texts, such as the Brahmananda Purana, state that in the beginning there was nothing besides the endless ocean. From this ocean, the Hiranyagarbha arose – a large golden egg in which Brahma had created himself. It was from here that Brahma formed the rest of the universe, including the earth and all its inhabitants.
The power emanating from this compelling Brahma image characterises Koh Ker style. As is typical with this style the Brahma has a soft face and is adorned with elaborate earrings.
His tiara or mukuta is also richly decorated. A tradition that continued to develop in Cambodia from the 10th century to the post-Angkor period.
In his hands he holds a mandala, conch shell, ball and mace.
Brahma is stood samapada upon a Yoni. The Yoni symbolizes the divine feminine energy, representing the cosmic womb from which all life emerges. The word "yoni" translates to "source" or "origin" and signifies, as does Brahma, the primordial source of creation.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and hands. Each detail is rendered perfectly. Traditional in appearance, the sculpture will bring serenity and timeless style to your home, office or sacred space.
