An antique Tibetan style Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion.
Avalokiteshvara is revered as the earthly manifestation of the self‑born, eternal Buddha Amitabha, guarding the world in the period between the passing of the historical Buddha, Gautama, and the future appearance of Maitreya. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who, out of boundless compassion, postpone their final entry into nirvana in order to guide all sentient beings toward liberation.
This elegant sculpture portrays Lord Avalokiteshvara seated upon a double lotus pedestal, itself raised on a simple base, emphasizing both stability and spiritual elevation. His right hand is held in the Dharmachakra mudra, the “Turning of the Wheel of Dharma,” symbolizing the continuous teaching and transmission of the Buddha’s doctrine.
The figure displays a beautiful aureate and sepia patina, adding warmth, depth, and a sense of age to the surface. His eyes are gently downcast, and his compassionate expression radiates peace, blessings, and inner serenity toward all who contemplate him. To either side, rising above his shoulders, bloom two lotus flowers, emblematic of purity, compassion, and the bestowal of great joy on all beings.
Upon his head, Avalokiteshvara wears an ornate Tibetan‑style tiara before the tall conical kirita‑makuta crown, a form that symbolizes mastery over both positive and negative mental states. Set within this elaborate crown is a small image of Buddha Amitabha, affirming Avalokiteshvara’s intimate connection with the Buddha of Infinite Light and reinforcing his role as an ever‑present guide on the path of compassion.
