Antique Indonesian Style Javanese Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Statue - 51cm/20"
Measures (Height) 351cm/20"
An Indonesian Javanese style standing Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion.
Avalokiteshvara is the earthly manifestation of the self-born eternal Buddha Amitabha. He guards the world in the interval between the departure of the historical Buddha, Gautama, and the appearance of the future buddha, Maitreya. Bodhisattva are beings who have gained enlightenment but postpone their ascension to nirvana to help others achieve the blessed state.
This fabulous sculpture depicts Lord Avalokitesvara stood samabhanga on a triple lotus blossom pedestal, which is itself set upon a decorated pedestal. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
In his hand he holds a fly whisk. His remaining hands are held in a gesture of teaching. The thumb and index finger of each hand touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom.
This mudra or gesture, with its iconic gesture of turning the wheel of Dharma, encapsulates the essence of Buddhist philosophy and practice. It represents the profound realization of the nature of suffering and the Bodhisattvas compassionate mission to guide others toward liberation.
The symbolism of this image serves as a source of inspiration and guidance for Buddhist practitioners worldwide, reminding them of the path of wisdom, compassion, and inner transformation that leads to the ultimate goal of enlightenment and liberation from suffering.
Avalokiteshvara has a lovely brown and green malachite patina. His eyes are downcast, his compassionate face bestowing peace, blessings and inner serenity on his devotees.
Upon his head he wears a decorative Javanese style tiara in front of his Kirita-Makuta or tall conical crown. This symbolises control over Positive and Negative attitudes.
Behind Avalokitesvara can be seen a simple halo or aureole. symbolizing his divinity.
