Antique Khmer Style Bronze Bayon Hevajra Statue - 20cm/8" Tall
Measures (Height) 20cm/8"
An antique Khmer-style bronze Hevajra statue in the post–Angkor Wat 12th century Bayon style, this powerful image represents one of the principal yidams—fully enlightened meditational deities—of Tantric (Vajrayana) Buddhism. Fierce in appearance yet ultimately compassionate in nature, Hevajra embodies the transformation of fear and ignorance into wisdom and bliss.
Hevajra is traditionally described as having multiple faces, arms, and attributes. Although his mouths roar the sacred sound OM and his body is dark and fearsome, his inner nature is utterly tranquil, embracing the consort Nairatmya in a union that signifies non-duality and the blissful wisdom of emptiness.
In this sculpture, Hevajra is seated upon a lotus plinth, the lotus flower signifying purity, compassion, and the joy that arises from enlightenment, unstained by the “mud” of worldly attachment. Each of his hands holds a different ritual object, rendered with remarkable precision, reflecting the richness of esoteric symbolism in Vajrayana practice.
Styled after the artistic techniques of the powerful Khmer Empire of Southeast Asia, particularly the Bayon period, this piece combines dynamic energy with refined detailing. Traditional in appearance yet visually arresting, it is sure to add a distinctive and contemplative presence to any room in a home or workplace.
