Antique Thai Style Bronze Chiang Saen Abhaya Mudra Protection Buddha Statue - 22cm/9"
Measures - (Height) 22cm/9"
An antique Thai style Buddha from HD Asian Art depicting a Chiang Saen style Buddha after his enlightenment. The Lord Buddha is seated in the Abhaya or protection mudra.
In Buddhist iconography, the Abhaya Buddha is a potent symbol of fearlessness and divine protection. The right hand is raised to shoulder height, palms facing outward and fingers extended, in the classic “gesture of fearlessness.” This ancient mudra, shared across Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions, signifies the dispelling of fear, the granting of safety, and the bestowal of inner peace and courage upon the devotee.
Expression and symbolism
The Buddha’s face is serene and introspective, with gently downcast eyes and a firm, composed brow that together convey deep inner stillness. His elongated earlobes recall his youth as a prince adorned with heavy gold earrings, a reminder of the worldly life he renounced. Rising from the crown of his head is a prominent ushnisha, symbolising advanced spiritual attainment, which culminates in a stylised lotus-bud finial—an emblem of purity and enlightenment emerging from the world’s turmoil.
The lotus flower bud shaped ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
In his hands he holds and alms bowl, symbol of charity and giving.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive azurite and malachite patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony. The Buddha's hands are held up in the abhaya mudra. The Abhaya mudra "gesture of fearlessness" is a mudra (gesture) that offers protection, reassurance and safety. Dispelling fear and according divine protection and bliss in many Indian religions. Both hands are held upright, and the palms are facing outwards. This is one of the earliest mudras found depicted on a number of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain images.
The sculpture provides the perfect traditional in appearance Buddha to bring serenity and timeless style to your home, office or sacred space.

Thank you so very much! Well, I needed Buddha here -- and I certainly now have Buddha here in many ways and many forms -- with thanks to HDAsianArt. Each statue you've sent has worked out very well -- each in its own way -- each combined in settings with other art pieces -- each has blended well -- finishing off different areas of my home -- and all communicates well to tell a story of different aspects of my life. I intentionally chose your pieces -- to get away from the "norm" of beautiful gild Buddhas that everyone has -- your pieces are quite unique -- and a bit more "real" -- which serves my purpose well. So, thank you.
