An antique Burmese style Shwe Zawa Buddhist disciple sculpture of Maudgalyayana, devotee of Buddha.
'Shwe Zawa' (shwe-zawa-yun) is a Burmese term for a style of lacquerware that displays a gold and black colour on a lacquered surface. It literally translates to "gold lacquer" and is a technique for creating the gold and black visual feast that we see here, to decorative items, often for religious or ceremonial purposes. The word "yun" refers to the lacquerware technique itself. The sculpture is carved from wood but then coated in lacquer.
Depicted here as a freestanding sculpture sat respectfully with hands in the adoration or Anjali mudra, Maudgalyayana holds his hands together in reverence. A contemporary of Buddha, Maudgalyayana was legendary for his piety and power.
Here the sculptor has imparted a touching sense of youthful tenderness. The disciple has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and firm brow.
The carving is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly.
