  • Antique Thai Style Bronze Chiang Saen Reclining Nirvana Buddha Statue - 66cm/26"

    Measures (Length) 66cm/26" Weight 14kg/31lbs

A substantial antique Thai style Chiang Saen style Buddha that depicts the Buddha in nirvana or enlightened pose.

This Chiang Saen style of Buddha is a distinctive and historically significant artistic tradition of Buddha statues in northern Thailand. This style is characterized by the unique aesthetic features, intricate details, and profound spiritual symbolism.

The Chiang Saen style originated in the north of Thailand, near the borders of Myanmar (Burma) and Laos. The area was a significant centre of Buddhist art and culture during the Lanna period, which spanned from the 13th to the 18th centuries.

Depicting the Buddha in his final moments of physical existence, the Nirvana Buddha symbolizes the ultimate liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

Nirvana, or Nibbana in Pali, is the ultimate goal in Buddhism. It signifies the cessation of all suffering, desire, and individual existence, marking the end of the cycle of samsara (rebirth). Achieving Nirvana means attaining a state of perfect peace, wisdom, and liberation. For Buddhists, it represents the pinnacle of spiritual practice and the fulfillment of the Buddha’s teachings.

In Thai Buddhism, the Nirvana Buddha holds deep symbolic meaning. It serves as a powerful reminder of the impermanence of life and the potential for liberation from suffering. The image of the Buddha lying peacefully on his side, often with a serene expression, embodies the tranquility and liberation that come with the attainment of Nirvana.

The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development.

This lovely Buddha demonstrates magnificent, intricate details with azurite and malachite tones to his patina and flowing robes that extend in delicate curls at the extremities.

The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.

The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and robes. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.

The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony. The Buddha is laying down on his side in calm repose. This pose captures him in his final moments before his death. The pose is also referred to as the sleeping Buddha and symbolises the Buddha's achievement of nirvana or enlightenment. The Buddha knew the exact moment of his death and at this time lay down to sleep and simply passed away peacefully with his enlightened soul eternally escaping the cycle of samasara.

The Nirvana Buddha is a profound symbol of ultimate liberation and spiritual awakening in Thai Buddhism. It represents the culmination of the Buddha's journey and the realization of Nirvana, offering a powerful reminder of the impermanence of life and the potential for liberation from suffering.

Through its historical, cultural, and religious significance, the Nirvana Buddha continues to inspire devotion, reflection, and spiritual practice in Thailand, embodying the timeless wisdom and compassion of the Buddha’s teachings.

As Thai Buddhists venerate the Nirvana Buddha, they connect with a rich tradition that guides them towards inner peace and ultimate enlightenment. The image inspires individuals to cultivate mindfulness, wisdom, and perseverance on their spiritual journey.
