An antique Khmer style standing bronze Lokeshvara sculpture from Cambodia.

Lokeshvara, also known as Avalokiteshvara or Guanyin, is one of the most revered and beloved figures in Buddhist iconography. As a Bodhisattva, Lokeshvara embodies the essence of compassion, representing the aspiration to alleviate suffering and attain enlightenment not only for oneself but also for all sentient beings.

Lokeshvara serves as a profound embodiment of the Bodhisattva ideal, which prioritizes compassion and altruism over personal liberation. His primary role is to hear and respond to the cries of suffering beings, using his wisdom and skillful means to alleviate their afflictions.

Lokeshvara is stood samabhanga on a simple lotus flower pedestal. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.

His face has a downcast gaze. Upon his head he wears a decorative Khmer style tiara in front of his Kirita-Makuta or tall conical crown. This symbolises control over Positive and Negative attitudes. He has an aquiline nose and elongated earlobes with large ear rings.

A top Lokeshvara's head can be seen a seated meditating Amitabha Buddha.

In two of his four hands he holds a holy sutra or manuscript and mala beads.

His lower right hand is held in the Varada mudra, the hand facing down and the palm outward. This mudra symbolizes charity, compassion and boon-granting. It is the mudra of the accomplishment of the wish to devote oneself to human salvation.

The five extended fingers in this mudra symbolize the following five perfections: Generosity, Morality, Patience, Effort and Meditative concentration

The lower left hand holds a Kalasha. The kalasha is considered a symbol of abundance and "source of life" in the Vedas. It is referred to as "overflowing full vase" in the Vedas.

The Kalasha is believed to contain amrita, the elixir of life, and thus is viewed as a symbol of abundance, wisdom, and immortality.

Lokeshvara stands as a powerful symbol of compassion in Buddhism and beyond. As a Bodhisattva, he exemplifies the enduring aspiration to alleviate suffering and promote the well-being of all sentient beings.

Lokeshvara's evolution over time and his cultural adaptability underscore the timeless relevance of his message, serving as an enduring source of inspiration for individuals seeking to cultivate compassion and make the world a more compassionate place.

The sculpture has a wonderful azurite and malachite patina.

As a collector of bronze idols of Buddhist and Hindu origin, I was very impressed by the fine quality and patina of the Dancing Shiva I recently purchased from HD Asian Art.

I want to especially convey my thanks to James for his patience and expertise as I made my choice. I will be sure to recommend HD Asian Art to my friends and fellow collectors.

My collection welcomes the addition of this statue of Lord Nataraja. It is a good example of Khmer art and workmanship.
