Antique Thai Style Bronze Sukhothai Reclining Nirvana Buddha Statue - 27cm/11"
Measures (Length) 27cm/11"
This antique Thai style Buddha statue, crafted in the renowned 13th-15th century Sukhothai style, depicts the Buddha in the nirvana or enlightenment pose.
Sukhothai style Buddha sculptures are characterized by serene and idealized human forms, depicted with a symmetrical oval face, snail-shell curly hair, a flame-like ushnisha, and a gentle, peaceful smile.
Influenced by Sri Lankan Buddhism, these bronze statues represent the Buddha after his enlightenment and were designed to convey serenity and spiritual power. Here, the Buddha also features a prominent aquiline nose, long earlobes, and broad shoulders, with robes often draped diagonally across the body.
The prominent ushnisha atop his head signifies a profound level of spiritual development, while his peaceful countenance is characterized by softly downcast, introspective eyes and a dignified brow. Distinctively elongated earlobes—remnants of his royal upbringing adorned with heavy gold earrings—add to his graceful features.
Exceptional casting brings forth the fine details of the face and flowing robes, each rendered with remarkable precision. The statue’s distinctive patina further enhances its timeless appeal, reflecting the careful artistry behind its creation.
Lord Buddha’s serene expression radiates harmony. Depicted reclining on his side in tranquil repose, this pose—often called the “Sleeping Buddha”—captures the final moments before his passing. Symbolizing entry into nirvana, it represents the Buddha’s peaceful transition, as he consciously lay down to depart from the cycle of samsara with an enlightened soul.
Resting upon a double lotus leaf pedestal, the statue evokes the lotus flower’s spiritual significance in Eastern religions. Emerging beautifully from muddy waters, the lotus exemplifies the journey to enlightenment and fulfillment. This symbol, often used for both held objects and pedestals, reminds us to leave behind worldly attachments and focus on inner spirituality as the path to true happiness.
