Luang Pho Phra Sai is one of the most revered Buddha images of northeastern Thailand, a luminous statue in the Mara Vichai posture enshrined at Wat Pho Chai in Nong Khai Province.

The statue is cast from bronze and is renowned for its exceptionally harmonious proportions and serene, gently radiant expression. 

Art historians classify Luang Pho Phra Sai Buddha as a Lan Xang‑period Buddha, reflecting the refined sculptural tradition of the former Lao kingdom that once encompassed parts of present‑day Laos and northeastern Thailand. The image is seated cross‑legged in meditation, with the right hand touching the earth in the classic Mara Vichai gesture, calling the earth to witness the Buddha’s resolve and awakening.

Luang Pho Phra Sai plays a particularly central role during Songkran, the Thai New Year festival in April. Each year, thousands of devotees gather in Nong Khai for ceremonies in which the statue is respectfully brought out in procession so that people can pour lustral water over the image, seeking cleansing, blessings and a fresh start for the new year.

Luang Pho Phra Sai Buddha statues are distinguished by their unique style, which is characterized by a blend of elegance, serenity, and idealized human form. The bodies profile is with broad shoulders and slender waist, covered by a Sanghati robe worn diagonally over the left shoulder, and is graced by a simple sash draped to the navel. The right shoulder is left bare.

The Buddha features an elognated heart shaped face, with almond shaped downcast eyes. Curved eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, and contoured lips with an exalted expression, appear smiling. The shell like curls of the hair form a heart shaped line around the face, surmounted by a hemispherical ushnisha, topped by a flamed ornamental finial, symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
