An antique Khmer Dvarapala or Temple Guardian in the Banteay Srei style.
A hexagonal chignon cover with a lotus flower on top enhances the head of this unusual dvarapala figure, in pre-Angkor twelfth century Banteay Srei style. The hair is arranged in curls that form a diadem in front and a long narrow nape at the back. The face is defined by slightly bulging eyes, arched eyebrows separated by a three sided rectangular form, rimmed lips, and a moustache and beard indicated by striated lines that lend them texture. The ears have crisp scalloped inner rims and lobes. Incised beauty lines mark the neck.
Dvarapalas are guardian figures that are often placed at the entrances to temple complexes.
The head is loose mounted on a wood base (later).
