Buddha Statue - Antique Lopburi Style Seated Enlightenment Buddha Statue - 21cm/8"
Measures - (Height) 21cm/8"
An antique Thai style Lopburi Enlightenment Buddha seated, in virasana, cross-legged symbol of Serenity, in the Bhumisparsa or 'Calling Earth to Witness' mudra seated on a simple pedestal.
Lopburi, a province located in central Thailand, has a historical legacy that dates back to the Dvaravati period (6th to 11th centuries) when Buddhism first flourished in the region. The Lopburi style Buddha emerged during the later Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, around the 13th to 17th centuries, marking a distinct phase in Thai religious artistry.
Enthroned on an ornate pedestal the Lopburi style Buddha is renowned for its symmetrical and well-proportioned features. As it typical, this Lopburi statue depicts Buddha in a seated position, with a calm and meditative expression. The emphasis on symmetry reflects the balance and harmony that Buddhists seek in their spiritual journey.
With fingers slightly touching the ground this position represents the subduing of Mara (a demon) who bombarded Buddha with demons, monsters, violent storms and the three seductive daughters. Remaining steadfast the Buddha testified to his meritorious past by pointing to the earth and calling the Earth Goddess, Thorani.
Rising from the ground the Earth Goddess wrings the water from her long black hair. By this action she raises a torrential flood that drowns Mara and his army of demons. Reflecting this story the mudra symbolizes enlightenment, as well as steadfastness and Buddha's achievement of perfection or nirvana.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. He has a large Sukhothai inspired flame ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to bring serenity to your home, office or sacred space.
One of the most recognizable of the Asian deities this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.

Silent yet vigilant, fierce yet serene, the temple lions of Angkor stand as eternal guardians of the divine.
They remind us that sacred space is not just to be admired but protected, that spiritual journeys require courage, and that the ancient Khmer understood the language of stone as profoundly as the language of the soul.
