Antique Khmer Style Bronze Enlightenment Phnom Da Buddha Statue - 15cm/6"

A pre‑Angkor, early 8th‑century style seated bronze Khmer Buddha in the Phnom Da style.
This refined Buddha sits on a simple pedestal, clothed in monastic dress composed of two traditional elements: a long undergarment wrapped around the hips and a loose sanghati robe draped over the left shoulder. The drapery clings sensuously to the body, subtly revealing the anatomy beneath in a manner that recalls early seventh‑century Dvaravati sculpture, itself rooted in the sculptural traditions of Gupta period India.
The Buddha’s face is serene, naturalistic, and warmly expressive. The hair is simply rendered and rises into a lotus‑flower‑shaped ushnisha, symbolising advanced spiritual attainment. Half‑closed eyes suggest inward meditation, while the softly modelled mouth and lightly dimpled chin lend a gentle, human tenderness. The surface of the bronze carries a very appealing deep malachite‑green patina, enhancing the sense of age and quiet presence.
His right hand is lowered in the Bhumisparsa mudra, the earth‑touching gesture of Enlightenment. With fingers lightly touching the ground, this gesture recalls the moment the Buddha called upon the Earth Goddess, Thorani, to bear witness to his countless past merits and to help subdue Mara, the tempter. As Thorani wrung the waters from her long black hair, a vast flood rose and swept away Mara and his army of demons. The mudra embodies this story of unshakable resolve and awakening, symbolising steadfastness, enlightenment, and the Buddha’s attainment of nirvana.
