Antique Sukhothai Style Thai Enlightenment Buddha Statue - 18cm/7"
Measures - (Height) 18cm/7"
An antique Sukhothai-style seated Enlightenment Buddha from Thailand, this elegant sculpture captures the refined grace and spiritual depth that made Sukhothai art one of the most revered expressions of Buddhism in Southeast Asia.
Originating from the Sukhothai Kingdom (13th–15th centuries), this style is celebrated for its flowing lines, serene presence, and idealised human form that reflect the subtle, contemplative ethos of the era.
The Buddha’s body is finely modelled with broad shoulders and a slender waist, draped in a sanghati robe worn diagonally across the left shoulder. A simple sash falls gracefully to the navel, marked with a characteristic fishtail-shaped notch, while the right shoulder is left bare in traditional Thai fashion.
The figure is seated upon a simple pedestal, adding to the sense of calm balance and composure.
The face is heart-shaped, with almond-shaped, downcast eyes that evoke introspection and inner peace. Gently arched brows meet above a prominent nose, and softly contoured lips curve into a subtle, exalted smile. Shell-like curls frame the face in a heart-shaped line and rise to a hemispherical ushnisha topped with a flame-shaped finial—an emblem of heightened spiritual attainment. Long, extended earlobes recall the Buddha’s princely youth, when heavy gold earrings once adorned him before his renunciation.
The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, or “Calling the Earth to Witness,” with the fingers of his right hand lightly touching the ground. This gesture represents the pivotal moment of enlightenment, when the Buddha, assailed by Mara’s armies of demons, storms, and seductive daughters, remained unshaken and called upon the Earth Goddess, Thorani, to bear witness to his countless past merits. Rising, Thorani wrung from her long hair a mighty flood that swept away Mara and his host—an enduring symbol of steadfastness, victory over inner and outer obstacles, and the attainment of nirvana.
Traditional in appearance yet full of life, this Sukhothai-style Enlightenment Buddha is an exceptional piece to bring serenity, elegance, and timeless spiritual character to any room in a home or workplace. One of the most recognisable images in Asian sacred art, this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to lend your space a quietly luminous and enduringly graceful presence.

Just a quick note to let you know your package arrived in fine shape a while ago. (DHL, your shipper, is a very good shipping service; even though I wound up being home when the delivery was made, I was glad to have been able to pre-arrange my electronic signature/authorization to leave the package on my porch, should I not have been home to receive it; that option is a very nice one as it saves the recipient from having to wait around all day, in order to sign for a delivery. I very much like the bronze bust. The coloring is particularly appealing. I've placed it on a bookcase just inside the front entry...it looks great!!!. Very handsome piece. Thanks again for having shipped so quickly, for packing the bust so carefully and for your helpful statuses throughout the transaction process. You are so very good to do business with.
