  • Buddha Statue - Antique Khmer Style Seated Stone Phnom Da Meditation Buddha Statue - 40cm/16"

    Measures (Height) 40cm/16"

A beautiful pre-Angkor early 8th century style Khmer sandstone seated meditation Buddha in Phnom Da style.

The Meditation Buddha, also known as Dhyana Mudra or Samadhi Mudra, is an iconic representation of the Buddha in a contemplative and meditative posture. This image holds deep significance within Buddhist tradition, conveying essential teachings and embodying the virtues of inner peace, mindfulness, and spiritual reflection.

Here Buddha is clothed in monastic dress composed of two traditional elements, an undergarment consisting of a long piece of cloth draped around the hips, and a long loose robe that covers his left shoulder and simple sash tied at the waist .

The clothing sensuously hugs the body revealing the anatomy beneath, a drapery style inspired by early seventh century Dvaravati styles that can be traced back to styles in Gupta period India.

The hair is depicted in circles of tight curls that decrease in size toward the ushnisha. The face has half closed eyes that suggest an inner meditation , a rather sensuous mouth, aquiline nose and a barely dimpled chin.

His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.

As is traditional, the Meditation Buddha is depicted here in a seated posture, with both legs crossed in the half-lotus position. The hands are placed in the Dhyana Mudra, where the right hand rests on top of the left hand, with the thumbs gently touching, forming a subtle triangle or circle. The Buddha's back is straight, and the gaze is lowered, signifying deep concentration and inner reflection.

Buddha's hands are held in the Dhyana mudra or 'Meditation Position'. Fingers barely touching and gently folded over the lap with palms facing upward. This hand gesture promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy.

The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. He has a large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizing his high level of spiritual development.  The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony.

Although the style resembles Dvaravati images carved in Thailand, the present Buddha is more sensuous than most Dvaravati Buddhas.

The Buddha here is an appealing blend of Gupta, Dvaravati and Khmer characteristics.

The Buddha is seated on a lotus petal pedestal.

The lotus flower represents the attaining of enlightenment and the ultimate fulfilment that follows. This symbol is heavily used in Eastern religions, which is why it can appear as both a held item or a seat. Some say that as the lotus flower grows in dirty water but becomes something beautiful, it demonstrates how we must forget our attachments to the material world around us and focus on our inner spirituality in order to seek happiness.
