  • Antique Pre-Angkor Style Stone Mounted Vishnu Torso - 78cm / 31"

    Measures – (Height) 78cm/31"

An antique Khmer style pre-Angkor Vishnu torso. The sculpture is in pre-Angkor 7th/8th century style.

This muscular image of Vishnu is depicted stood straight legs mounted on a wood base (later). The image is carved in the round with the back as carefully carved as the front.

The style of the Vishnu derives from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The dhoti covering the lower half of the body is arranged in the typical Andhran Ikshvaku period fashion, with a thick rolled cloth sash crossing the front of the figure at hip level and a suspended loop dropping down the thighs. The sash is knotted at the hips with the ends falling down at the sides of the body.

In his left hand he holds a lotus bud and in his right possibly a symbol of the earth (bhu). The remains of the other two arms can be seen to the side and rear of the statue.

The sculpture certainly possesses a muscular grandeur, the torso swells to a heavy and conventional shape evoking the aesthetic of the pre-Angkor period.

Provenance: Private Singapore Collection. The torso is mounted on a wood base (later).

The Naga and dragon arrived and have settled in. They are all very beautiful pieces, and they will give me much inspiration and protection for a long time. Thank you once again for making my home a sanctuary! May the Naga protect you!

I received the Buddha early afternoon on Friday. It is much prettier than I could have ever expected. The pictures do not show the beauty of this piece. It is amazing. You are amazing as well for sending it to me so fast and so well packaged. Thank you so much. I feel so lucky to have this piece and thank you so much for making that happen.

Debra, Houston, TX, USA

Back last nite, picked up the package today and like before I am absolutely thrilled with my purchase :-) Both pieces are so beautiful, I have my eye on a couple of other pieces...
