Antique Angkor Wat Style Khmer Stone Vishnu & Lakshmi Statue - 83cm/33"
Measures - (Height) 83cm/33"
An antique Angkor Wat style torso. Half of the statue depicts Vishnu the other Lakshmi.
The sculpture stands solidly on two legs, the feet and stone base having been broken off. The torso demonstrates a diadem tied at the back and a conical chignon cover and a jewelled belt with pendants hidden beneath the drapery fold in front but visible on the back. During ceremonies she might have been adorned with real jewellery designed for statuary.
The face displays rimmed lips, rimmed open eyes and eyebrows that form one continuous ridge across the forehead. As would be expected for Vishnu half the face displays a moustache.
Lakshmi is clothed in a pleated sampot with a down-turned edge at the waist. The lower edge of the central pleat opens into an oblique ornate fishtail in front, typical of the Angkor Way style. The style is distinctly archaistic, harking back to tenth- and eleventh century drapery conventions and the continuous ridged eyebrows.
Lakshmi is the embodiment of beauty, grace and charm. Also called Mahalakshmi, she is said to bring good luck, and is believed to protect her devotees from all kinds of misery and money-related sorrows.
The torso has a slender waist, broad hips and shoulders. Vishnu wears a vertically striated sampot, bound by a plain belt with the fabric pulled between the legs and wrapped around the belt at the back, the pleated ends forming a 'butterfly wing' shape, typical of the Angkor Wat style.
Vishnu is both world protector and preserver, restorer of moral order - he is all-powerful and all-pervasive by nature. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity (both material and spiritual), light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage.
The Vishnu is loose mounted on a wood base (later).
The perfect traditional in appearance Angkor Wat style sculpture to bring serenity and timeless style to you home, office or sacred space.
