Vishnu Sculpture - Antique Angkor Wat Style Stone Mounted Vishnu Statue - 95cm / 38"
Measures – (Height) 95cm/38”
An antique Angkor Wat style Khmer Vishnu torso. The sculpture is in 12th century Angkor Wat style.
This muscular image of Vishnu is depicted with crouched legs mounted on a wood base (later). The image is carved in the round with the back as carefully carved as the front.
He is clothed in a pleated sampot can kpin, with a butterfly bow behind that has been naturalistically represented to accommodate the pose. The artist's ingenuity is particularly noticeable in the way both feet visibly demonstrate the weight of Vishnu bearing down on them.
His braided hair is dressed into a lotus bud shaped ushnisha, symboling his purity.
In the Angkor Wat style the moustache of Vishnu is clearly visible. The fullness of the forms give the face a softness which accentuates the almost downcast eyes, and the fleshy and sensual lips. The anatomy shows a strong sense of observation. The overall silhouette is elegant and a reminder of the Angkorian Art.
The ornate carving of the diadem provide a delightful contrast with the smooth, polished stone, facial features. The inner rims of the ears appear to display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The lobes are stretched and decorated with jewels as they would have been during rituals and ceremonies. The face is defined by slightly arched eyebrows, full rimmed lips, wide open rimmed eyes and a rather broad, flat nose.
In his left hand he holds a conch shell and in his right possibly a symbol of the earth (bhu). The remains of the other two arms can be seen to the side and rear of the statue.
The sculpture certainly possesses a muscular grandeur, the torso swells to a heavy and conventional shape evoking the aesthetic of the Angkor period. The image radiates an aloofness, the quiet power of Vishnu and the sensuality typical of the Angkor Wat period.
The Vishnu has perfect balance and proportions which are the key to a fine Vishnu sculpture. The patina and details of this piece are particularly appealing.
Provenance: Ex- private US collection.

Received the Mahamuni Buddha statue from 19th Century. The piece is remarkable. Very fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase authentic burmese buddha piece with burmese script on the bottom from my own country. Noted fast shipping to Colorado and above all, I am very impressed with the customer service. The sale rep contacted me personally via email to help me find the right statue I was looking for. Thank you!

The Buddha arrived earlier, very impressed. It goes very well with the rest of my collection. A unique piece. I'm sure I'll be back to purchase some more items (when I finish decorating...). Many thanks again.
