  • Antique Java Style Majapahit Teaching Seated Bronze Devi Tara Statue - Protector & Preserver - 46cm/18"

    Measurements Height 46cm/18"

An antique Java Style bronze standing bronze Devi Tara sculpture in the 13th century Majapahit style.

In Buddhism, Tara is a Bodhisattva. She is the Goddess of Compassion. He she is stood samabhanga in the Abhaya pose of teaching, loose mounted on a wood base.

Over the centuries many artists have given Tara physical form, but it's hard to imagine a more beautiful image than this serene, beautiful figure. The statue of Tara is cast in one piece of bronze, that has a rich, malachite patina and compelling lustre. She stands with her benign gaze cast down. Her face tells you at once that she comes from Java, Indonesia. She has an aquiline nose and elongated earlobes with large earrings.

Her braided chignon includes a seated Buddha in Dhyana or meditation pose. Her ushnisha is formed as a lotus bud symbolising her divinity. She has a quite impossible hour-glass figure, and her upper body is completely naked.

A tiny wasp waist is covered by a flimsy sarong that clings to her, beguilingly revealing her shapely lower body. She has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.

Her hands are held in front in the dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. This symbolises generosity.

Tara is one of the spiritual protectors to whom the Buddhist faithful can turn in distress. The statue of Tara takes us into a world where faith and bodily beauty converge, to move us beyond ourselves.

A beaded aureole stands behind also representing her divinity. The standing sculpture has a wonderful aged malachite patina.

The Buddha statue is marvelous! There are not enough words to describe how deeply the happiness I could feel when looking at the statue. Again, I sincerely appreciate everything. By the way, the parcel was extremely well packaged, I really like the way you arranged things inside the box to keep the statue safe. I look forward to our next transaction in the future.
