Antique Kashmiri Style Standing Bronze Vaikuntha Vishnu Statue - Protector & Preserver - 29cm/12"
Measurements Height 29cm/12"
An antique Kashmiri Style standing bronze Vaikuntha Vishnu sculpture in 8th century Kashmir style.
This complex form of Vishnu, first referred to by the name Vaikuntha in the seventh-century Vishnudharmottarapurana, is three-faced (chaturmurti), with the heads of a lion (right) and a boar (left) flanking a human head. He is also identifiable in this form by the epithet Para-Vasudeva, “the highest god.”
The lion and boar represent Vishnu’s Varaha and Narasimha avatars.
The small attendant on Vishnu’s left is Chakrapurusha, the personification of his war discus, balanced on his right by Gadadevi, the female personification of his battle mace.
From the eighth through the tenth century, this three-faced Vishnu was the paramount cult icon in the kingdom of Kashmir.
Here Vaikuntha is stood on round double lotus petal pedestal and holds a lotus blossom in his right hand. Symbolising his purity.
Vaikuntha wears a richly bejewelled dhotis and upavitas. His face has a serene downcast gaze. Vaikuntha wears a decorative Kashmir style tiara, on her head, in front of her Kirita-Makuta or tall conical crown. This symbolises his control over Positive and Negative attitudes.
He has an aquiline nose and elongated earlobes with large earrings. The standing sculpture has a wonderful azure and malachite patina.
