This openwork finial depicts an antique Khmer style mounted wood Skanda on his Peacock from Cambodia.

This magnificent sculptures represents Skanda, God of War, sitting on his special mount, Paravani, a peacock and a killer of snakes. It's great size is typical of the sculpture carved for Jayavarman IV's capital city of Lingapura.

Skanda is clothed in a sampot can kpin and his twisted hair is arranged in horizontal rows to form a cylindrical jatamukuta that is surrounded by his diadem in typical Koh-Ker style. The eyebrows, depicted by a continuous ridge that runs across the forehead, a beard and a moustache define his face. The inner rims of the ears are scalloped. Skanda holds a lotus bud in his right hand.

The peacock, Paravani, is shown with a jewelled necklace. The details of the peacock's head and the feathers are intricately carved with a jewellers precision.

Skanda is the son of Shiva and Parvati along with Ganesha, the beloved elephant headed deity. As God of War, Skanda is the chief defender of the Gods. He is also known by other names, such as Karttikeya and Kumera.

Here Skanda is surrounded by a flaming aureole, symbolising his divinity.

He is mounted to a wood base.
