  • Antique Koh Ker Style Khmer Stone Shiva - The Destroyer - 60cm/24"

    Measures (Height) 60cm/24"

Antique Koh Ker style Cambodian Shiva. The power emanating from this compelling Shiva image characterises Koh Ker style.

As is typical with this style the Shiva has a soft face and is adorned with elaborate earrings.

Traces of a rich applied patina demonstrating red, black, brown colours and gold leaf. Sculptures such as this would originally have been painted in vibrant colours by the Khmer.

This handsome head is identified by the crescent moon carved in relief on the front of his jatamukuta (crown of hair) and the third eye marking his forehead. The face has eyebrows described by a continuous ridged line, a moustache, a beard, rimmed lips and wide open eyes. The inner rims of the ears are scalloped. The lobes are pierced to receive actual earrings, typical characteristics of tenth century Khmer sculpture.

His tiara or mukuta is also richly decorated. A tradition that continued to develop in Cambodia from the 9th century to the post-Angkor period.

As the destroyer, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent and unchanging. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts The Shiva is mounted on wood (later).

This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add a unique touch to any room of your home or workplace.

Let Us Help You Find The Piece You Desire

I just opened the Buddha statue I purchased from you. I couldn’t be happier! It’s really beautiful, particularly the face. The shipping was faster than pieces I’ve bought on Etsy coming from the US, so thank you!! Do you have any idea how old this statue is? I’m looking forward to receiving the Avalokitesvara statue I recently ordered.

Laura, New York City, NY, USA

The Buddha head arrived safely today. The look of serenity they all possess is very appealing. This sandstone head strikes me as being particularly beautiful. The way the sculptor has created that look of complete contentment amazes me. Just the hint of a smile - definitely more Mona Lisa than Laughing Cavalier! A wonderful piece and I love it!

Oh my word...I have no words! Speechless. Thank you.
