Antique Khmer Style Bronze Bayon Shiva & Naga - 43cm/17"
Measures (Height) 43cm/17"
An antique Khmer style example of the 12th century Bayon sculpture at Angkor Thom of the five faced Shiva, called Sadasiva. The five faces are Ishana, Tatpurusha, Aghora, Vamadeva and Sadyojata. They radiate, in order, revealment of grace, sublimation of the five senses, omnipresence, omnipotence and omniscience. This sequence is the creative cycle, when reversed the cycle of dissolution is depicted.
The Naga snake indicates the need to exercise caution, use wisdom, resist temptation, move carefully and use discrimination. Four faces are said to have revealed the Vedas; the fifth (Ishana) revealed the Agamas.
The sculpture is similiar to those found at Angkor Thom, Cambodia the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII The fine details of the sculpture particularly the faces and Naga are a delight to behold.
Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add serenity to your home, office or sacred space.
One of the most recognisable of the Asian deities this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.
