Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Shiva Parvati & Ganesha Statue - 19cm/8"
Measures (Height) 19cm/8"
An Indonesian (Java) enthroned Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha sculpture in 13th century Majapahit style.
Both Shiva and his wife Parvati are seated on a round lotus petal pedestal, which is itself presented on a multi-tier, square pedestal that forms part of a larger sculpture comprising Shiva, Parvati and their son Ganesha.
Shiva and Parvati are both dressed in simple robes, with a sash tied around each of their waists and are wearing a number of pieces of ornate jewellery, including crown and earrings. The Trilochana of Shiva can be seen on his forehead - the Three-Eyed Lord. It is the eye of wisdom, free from 'Maya', the illusion, and duality of life. It is also believed to be the source of his untamed energy.
As the destroyer, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent and unchanging. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts. Shiva is part of the Hindu holy trimurti which includes Brahma and Vishnu.
As the wife of Shiva, Parvati is the voice of encouragement, reason, freedom, and strength, as well as of resistance, power, action and retributive justice.
Ganesha is the elephant headed son of Shiva. Revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles, patron of arts and sciences and the deity of intellect and wisdom.
Both Shiva and Parvati hold a Kalasha. The Kalasha is considered a symbol of abundance and "source of life" in the Vedas. It is referred to as "overflowing full vase" in the Vedas. The Kalasha is believed to contain amrita, the elixir of life, and thus is viewed as a symbol of abundance, wisdom, and immortality.
Parvati holds in her left hand the stem of a lotus flower which extends above her shoulder. The hair of all three deities is piled in a tripartite chignon decorated with a cockade.
Both Shiva and Parvati are discretely adorned with only a necklace, diamond shaped earrings, a Yajnopavita (Scared Brahmanical thread) and a single bangle on each wrist.
A beaded aureole with flaming rim and lotus flowers at the apex sit behind the three Deities. This circle of light symbolises their divinity.
