  • Antique Stone Angkor Wat Style Male Deity Torso (possibly Vishnu) - 68cm / 27"

    Measures (Height) 68cm/27"

An antique Khmer style Male torso (possibly Vishnu).

The sculpture is depicted in the Angkor Wat style. Typical of the Angkor Wat style the sculpture possesses a grandeur, the torso swells to a heavy and conventional shape evoking the aesthetic of the early tenth century. At the same time, the statue is not submitted to strict iconographic norms, the statue loses its stiffness and becomes more human.

Typical of the Angkor Wat style is the stylised treatment of his pleated sampot with its narrow anchor-shaped panels in front surmounted by the overhanging flap of the ruffled end of the cloth. The Vishnu torso has a slender waist, broad hips and shoulders, wearing a vertically striated sampot, bound by a plain belt tied with the end hanging down onto the left thigh and pulled up under the belt with two curled ends just below the navel, the fabric pulled between the legs and wrapped around the belt at the back, the pleated ends forming a 'butterfly wing' shape. The right hand shoulder appears to show the joint of two arms. Hence the assumption that this sculpture was originally one of Vishnu.

    Provenance: Private Singapore Collection.

The torso is mounted on a wood base (later).

My partner got back from Thailand this evening, and was surprised and delighted to see the walking Buddha statue I bought from you recently. We both like it very much indeed - you don't see so many walking Buddha statues, and this one is very well moulded and finely detailed. You also packed it very thoroughly for posting. So thank you very much! It looks very beautiful in our hall, facing visitors as they come through our front door.
