An antique Gandhara style bronze standing Buddha.
This magnificent Buddha is stood on a round double lotus leaf pedestal.
The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all. It symbolises Buddha attaining enlightenment and the ultimate fulfilment that follows. This symbol is heavily used in Eastern religions, which is why it can appear as both a held item or a seat. Some say that as the lotus flower grows in dirty water but becomes something beautiful, it demonstrates how we must forget our attachments to the material world around us and focus on our inner spirituality in order to seek happiness.Here Buddha wears his rippled winter robes that serenely descend over his shoulders.
His robe is draped over both shoulders. A portion of the garment that covers the wrists falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes part way down allowing his under-cloth or skirt to be seen.
The Buddha has straight hair, raised in a top knot on top of his head that is a clear indication of the Gandharan style. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development.
His serene face displays down cast eyes, a single arched eyebrow and aquiline nose. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. His arms are raised wide in a gesture of welcome and hospitality.
He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and fingers. Each detail is rendered perfectly.
The distinctive patina and detail of the piece is also particularly delightful.
