An antique Java style standing bronze Dattatreya Trimurthy sculpture in the 13th century Majapahit style. Dattatreya is the synthesis of Shiva, Vishnu & Brahma, the complete Hindu Holy Trinity, with the face of Vishnu in the center, Shiva to Vishnu's left and Brahma to his right. Brahma is the Hindu God of Creation. Vishnu the preserver and protector. Shiva the destroyer. Together they form the Trimurti.
Dattatreya is stood samabhanga on a round lotus petal pedestal which is itself stood on a decorated pedestal. In front of him can be seen a seated Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. An aureole behind Ganesha demonstrates his divinity. To his left and right two devi stand samabhanga. One devi holds a fly whisk, the other a lotus flower. The latter representing purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
Dattatreya holds some of his hands in the in vitarka mudra. A gesture of teaching. He also holds in his hands a copy of the Hindu holy Vedas, a Trident, fly whisk and Kalasha.
The kalasha is considered a symbol of abundance and "source of life" in the Vedas. It is referred to as "overflowing full vase" in the Vedas. The Kalasha is believed to contain amrita, the elixir of life, and thus is viewed as a symbol of abundance, wisdom, and immortality.
He wears a richly bejewelled dohti and upavita. His face has a downcast gaze. Upon his head he wears a decorative Javanese style tiara in front of his Kirita-Makuta or tall conical crown. This symbolises control over Positive and Negative attitudes. On his forehead he has a third eye or urna.
He has an aquiline nose and elongated earlobes with large ear rings. Brahma is backed by an aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, topped by a decorative finial. The demonstrates his divinity. The sculpture has a wonderful brown malacite patina.
