Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Ratnasambhava Buddha - 14cm/6"
Measures (Height) 14cm/6"
An Indonesian (Java) Ratnasambhava Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style.
This lovely Buddha is seated on a double lotus leaf pedestal which is itself seated upon a tiered square pedestal.
His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the under-cloth or skirt is completely covered. A beaded aureole, with flaming rim and lotus leaf finial sits behind the head of the Buddha. Above is head can be seen a parasol.
This circle of light symbolises his divinity. The Buddha's right hand faces down, with the palm outwards symbolising generosity. His left hand in dhyana or meditation mudra, holds an alms bowl representing charity.
He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
Ratnasambhava Buddha represents richness. His name translates to "Origin of the Jewel" or the "Jewel-Born One." In Buddhism, the Three Jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha and Ratnasambhava is often thought of as the giving Buddha. He reigns in the South and is associated with the second skandha, sensation. Meditation on Ratnasambhava Buddha vanquishes pride and greed, focusing instead on equality.
He holds his hands in the wish-fulfilling mudra: his right hand facing down and the palm outward and his left in the mudra of meditation. This symbolises generosity.
