Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Protection Buddha Statue - 20cm/8"
Measures (Height) 20cm/8"
An Indonesian (Java) enthroned Protection Buddha, surrounded by acolytes of Buddha in adoration pose, in 13th century Majapahit style.
This lovely Buddha is seated on a multi-tier pedestal, with his feet resting on a lotus flower. His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered.
He holds his left hand in the wish-fulfilling mudra: his left hand facing down. The Buddha's right hand is raised in the abhaya mudra. The Abhaya mudra "gesture of fearlessness" is a mudra (gesture) that offers protection, reassurance and safety. Dispelling fear and according divine protection and bliss in many Indian religions. Both hands are held upright, and the palms are facing outwards. This is one of the earliest mudras found depicted on a number of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain images. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony.
The Buddha is backed by an aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, topped by a lotus flower finial. He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.
He is surrounded by three acolytes/disciples of Buddha in adoration pose. These are also sat on multi-tiered pedestals.
