Antique Khmer Style Wood Standing Thoughtful Friday Buddha Statue - 97cm/39"
Measures (Height) 97cm/39"
An antique Khmer style teak wood Buddha from Cambodia. The enlightened Buddha stands with hands crossed over his chest. In reflective thought the Buddha contemplated how he can explain the cause of all suffering to others, under the Bodhi tree. After enlightenment, the Buddha stood still for seven days under the Bodhi Tree to contemplate the suffering of all living things. He was tempted to enter Nirvana immediately (by Mara), but he wanted others to know the true doctrine, and resolves to communicate his doctrine to others.
This is also the Buddha for those born on a Friday.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head, symbolizes his high level of spiritual development, rises to a stylised lotus bud finial. The carving is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and hands. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
