  • Antique Pre-Angkor Style Phnom Da Mounted Stone Stele Durga Statue - 36cm/14"

    Measures (Height) 36cm/14"

An antique Pre-Angkor style Phnom Da Durga standing in Samapada.

Durga the Goddess famous for killing the buffalo-demon, Mahishasura, whose head adorns the base of the Stele on which she stands triumphant. An abbreviated version of a scene that had earlier a much more realistic rendition in Southeast Asian Art. Durga is four armed and holds a chakra in her upper right hand, a conch in her upper left hand and a staff in her lower left, attributes traditionally held by Vishnu with whom she is associated in Khmer beliefs.

The deity is clothed in a long sampot that has been carefully rendered to show the creases in the material formed as it is gathered up to tie at the waist. Prominent beauty lines embrace the lower portions of her breast. The Durga image here is shown wearing a miter, a major feature linking her to the God Vishnu.

The rear of the stele is inscribed with multiple lines of sanskrit text. The stele does not appear to be dated.

The stele without the wood base measures 36cm x 20cm x 5cm (or 30cm tall excluding its locator). Loose mounted to a wood base (later).
