Antique Majapahit Style Bronze Javanese Seated Vajrapani Statue - Protector of Buddha - 23cm/9"
Measurements H23cm (9")
An antique Javanese style bronze Vajrapani in the 13th century Majapahit style. Vajrapani is one of the earliest-appearing bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. He is the protector and guide of Gautama Buddha and rose to symbolize the Buddha's power.
Here Vajrapani is seated on a round pedestal with a lotus leaf base. In his hand he holds a vajra. A vajra is a ritual weapon symbolizing the properties of a diamond (indestructibility) and a thunderbolt (irresistible force) and is the Sanskrit word having both meanings.
Vajrapani is extensively represented in Buddhist iconography as one of the earliest three protective deities or bodhisattvas surrounding the Buddha. Each of them symbolizes one of the Buddha's virtues: Manjushri manifests all the Buddhas' wisdom, Avalokiteshvara manifests all the Buddhas' immense compassion, and Vajrapani protects Buddha and manifests all the Buddhas' power as well as the power of all five tathagatas (Buddhahood of the rank of Buddha).
