An Indonesian (Java) Teaching Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style.

This lovely Buddha is seated on a circular double-lotus pedestal, itself on a square pedestal with his right leg resting on a lotus flower. His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered.

The Buddha is seated in the half lotus position with his hand raised in front of his chest in the dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger of both hands touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom.

The Buddha is backed by a circular aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, topped by a finial.

He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.

My partner got back from Thailand this evening, and was surprised and delighted to see the walking Buddha statue I bought from you recently. We both like it very much indeed - you don't see so many walking Buddha statues, and this one is very well moulded and finely detailed. You also packed it very thoroughly for posting. So thank you very much! It looks very beautiful in our hall, facing visitors as they come through our front door.
