Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Enlightenment Buddha Statue - 10cm/4"
Measures - (Height) 10cm/4"
An Indonesian (Java) Enlightenment and Charity Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style.
This lovely Buddha is seated on a circular double-lotus pedestal, itself on a square pedestal
in the cross-legged yogic, adamantine posture of vajraparyankasana, the right leg over the left, with the soles of both feet facing upward. His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered.
The Buddha is seated in the Bhumisparsa or 'Calling the Earth to Witness' mudr_. With fingers slightly touching the ground this position represents the subduing of Mara (a demon) who bombarded Buddha with demons, monsters, violent storms and the three seductive daughters. Remaining steadfast the Buddha testified to his meritorious past by pointing to the earth and calling the Earth Goddess, Thorani.
Rising from the ground the Earth Goddess wrings the water from her long black hair. By this action she raises a torrential flood that drowns Mara and his army of demons. This gesture reflects this story symbolizing enlightenment, as well as steadfastness and Buddha's achievement of perfection or nirvana.
In his right hand the Buddha holds an alms bowl symbolising his charity and compassion.
The Buddha is backed by a pentagon shaped aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, topped by a finial.
He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.

The embracing of Buddhist teachings is what makes it such good luck to bring a statue into your home. Whilst it’s definitely worth doing your research to know exactly what it is that your statue can do for you (not least so that you can make the most out of its presence), there is no such thing as bad luck from buying a Buddha statue for yourself, so long as you keep it clean and treat it with its due respect.
