Betel leaves are used to wrap a mildly narcotic mix of areca nut, lime and spices. The betel box consists of a nest of four pieces. Each is made of woven bamboo with a lacquer coating. The box decoration is uniquely Burmese whereby the design is engraved and then filled with colouring.

Throughout Asia, it was customary for individuals to own a specially compartmentalised box to store the various materials used to make fresh betel nut quids. The grander the individual the grander the betel nut box, with Provisional Governor's and Royalty often employing bearers for their betel nut box.

Staining teeth and the floor where excess spittle is often spat, red, the tradition has lapsed in many countries but not all! A typical box would have separate compartments for sliced betel nuts, fresh betel leaf and various spices such as cardamom, fennel, saffron and lime powder. Throughout the day or when meeting with others the fully stocked betel nut box would allow for a tasty betel chew.

This antique Betel nut box depicts a traditional signs of the Zodiac. As can be seen in our pictures a small blemish can be seen on the top of the Betel Box.
