Description

The Apsara is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology – a ‘celestial nymph’ or ‘celestial maiden’. Apsaras are said to be able to change their shape at will, and rule over the fortunes of gaming and gambling. They are associated with fertility rites.

Apsaras are beautiful, supernatural female beings. They are youthful and elegant, and superb in the art of dancing. They are often the wives of the Gandharvas, the court musicians of Indra. They dance to the music made by the Gandharvas, usually in the palaces of the gods, entertain and sometimes seduce gods and men. As caretakers of fallen heroes, they may be compared to the valkyries of Norse mythology.

As etherial beings who inhabit the skies, and are often depicted taking flight, or at service of a god, they may be compared to Angels.

This bronze sculpture is provided with a unique aging to the piece. As all unique pieces it is important to note that the image shown here is (a very close!) representation of the actual piece that will be shipped.

The applied patina is representative of antique pieces that can be viewed in National Collections throughout the world. However, as a reproduction it does not impact the historic legacy of the country by removing National Treasures from their original environment.

The piece is designed and crafted by hand. Our ability to purchase these remarkable objects direct from local villages and workshops ensures that much needed funds are invested in the local community and not be profiteering middlemen.

Material: Bronze Dimensions (HxWxD): 54cm x 28cm x 11.5cm
